Children’s Books as Christmas Gift Options

Family Time. Parents trying to buy Christmas gifts within a budget and give their children meaningful presents at the same time have an option that is sometimes forgotten: children’s books.

Jane Kelley, assistant professor at Washington State University’s College of Education, recommends buying books for children “not only because they are an affordable option to toys, but also because books provide valuable family time during which parents can read to children, or vice versa, and create a very special bond.”

Kelley can help parents navigate through Web sites listing award-wining books for children. “Sometimes we tend to buy what we liked as children even though the message in the book might be old-fashioned,” she said. ”There are many new books today that children can enjoy and understand.”

Kelley will be available during the Christmas break through her e-mail address, jekelley@wsu.edu
