WSU prof Sturgeon lauded

A WSU professor was among five honorees winning 2006 Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Awards for their outstanding contributions to promoting human rights.

Noël Sturgeon, a professor and chair of the Department of Women’s Studies, actively mentors students and consistently teaches the ideals espoused by King inside and outside the classroom, said nominators. She is known to take special interest in supporting junior faculty members — particularly those from underrepresented communities.

Others earning a King award are:
• Derik Robinson, a University of Idaho student.
• Rula Awaad-Rafferty, a UI associate professor in the Department of Interior Design.
• The YWCA at WSU.
• Gamma Alpha Omega sorority at the UI.
