PULLMAN, Wash. — More than 400 students from Washington and northern Idaho high schools will participate in the 10th annual Math Day competition Oct. 26 on the Washington State University campus. Some $8,000 in scholarships will be awarded to winners of the competition.
WSU faculty members Dwayne DeTemple and Carolyn Smith, Math Day co-chairs, said the high school competitors will participate in one or more competitions. Each student will take the PROBE, a comprehensive exam, at 9:40 a.m. in the Compton Union Building. During team competition that starts at 11:20 a.m., small and large school teams will compete in separate divisions for a double elimination contest that uses a “College Bowl” format.
The final rounds of team competition start about 2:15 p.m. in the CUB Ballroom. Team trophies and individual awards will be given to the top three teams in both categories immediately following the competition.
Participating high schools include Bellevue, Colville, Decatur, Federal Way, Kamiakin, Kentlake, Lewis and Clark, Lewiston, Mead, Moses Lake, Rainier, Pasco, Pullman, Sandpoint, Thomas Jefferson, University and Walla Walla.
Also competing will be Almira/Coulee-Hartline, Clearwater Valley, Connell, Deer Park, DeSales, Freeman, Garfield-Palouse, Kendrick, Kiona-Benton, Lakeside, Liberty, Logos School, Nez Perce, Oroville, Potlatch and St. John-Endicott high schools.
