Flags across the state, including on Washington State University campuses, will be lowered to half-staff Friday in honor of former Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers.

Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson issued the order on Wednesday to lower United States and Washington State flags on Nov. 6. Myers passed away on Oct. 27 in Seattle following a short battle with a rare, aggressive neurological disease, according to a statement from his family posted by the Whitman Co. Sheriff’s Office.

A public memorial service for Myers will take place at 1 p.m. Friday at Beasley Coliseum on the WSU Pullman campus.
