Gerry Ebalaroza-Tunnell, an awarding-winning children’s author and Washington State Global Campus alumna, was inducted into the WSU Global Campus Society of Distinguished Alumni (SODA) on Oct. 25.
“I’m still a little shocked to be nominated for such a prestigious award, to be honest,” said Ebalaroza-Tunnell.
Known affectionately as “Dr. G,” Ebalaroza-Tunnell is the author of Let’s Live ALOHA, an award-winning children’s book that promotes qualities such as empathy and adaptability.
Ebalaroza-Tunnell earned her bachelor of arts in social sciences degree online through WSU Global Campus in 2011 and later completed a PhD in transformative studies and consciousness at the California Institute of Integral Studies.
Her impact has been widely recognized, including by the WSU Alumni Association, which presented her with an Alumni Achievement Award earlier this year.

“Dr. G exemplifies what it means to be a distinguished alumni with an untiring commitment to community, exceptional academic achievement, and unwavering support for WSU and the Global Campus,” said Kelly Newell, Global Campus associate vice chancellor for strategic partnerships and development. “Through her service, leadership, and Cougar ALOHA Spirit, Dr. G truly deserves this recognition and celebration!”
A proud Native Hawaiian, Ebalaroza-Tunnell integrates her cultural heritage into her work as an author, speaker, and organizational consultant focused on inclusion and positive, lasting change.
In her book, Ebalaroza-Tunnell introduces readers to the acronym ALOHA — Ask, Listen, Observe, have a Heart focus, and Adapt — drawing from traditional Hawaiian wisdom to encourage intentional, compassionate living.
“Being inducted into SODA feels like a call to reciprocity,” said Ebalaroza-Tunnell. “It means stepping into my role as a WSU Global ambassador — carrying the spirit of our institution with integrity and ALOHA and using my experience to open doors for others.”
“Being inducted is about building bridges, sharing knowledge in meaningful ways, and helping students from around the world see that their stories and gifts belong here.”
Ebalaroza-Tunnell was officially inducted into SODA during a ceremony on the field during a WSU football game at Gesa Field. She was awarded a commemorative plaque by WSU Global Campus Chancellor Dave Cillay.
“We created the SODA program to recognize outstanding alumni who set a powerful example for global campus students and the entire WSU Community,” said Newell.
Global Campus established the SODA in 2022 to honor exceptional online Cougs and their accomplishments, putting a spotlight on their inspiring spirit of excellence and generosity. Since then, SODA has inducted nine members, including prominent business, civic and philanthropic leaders, ardent supporters of the WSU Cougar family, and unwavering advocates of lifelong learning.
“We’re proud to have Dr. Gerry Ebalaroza-Tunnel as one of our many outstanding Global Campus alumni,” said Cillay. “It’s very important for us to recognize those like Dr. G who embody the values and excellence of Global Campus Cougs. That’s what the Society of Distinguished Alumni is all about.”
