Microsoft Teams chat and channels update, July 2025

Microsoft will soon implement a redesigned chat and channels experience in Teams. Expected later this month, the update introduces a unified Chat tab that combines chats, channels, and Teams into one streamlined view.

A guided onboarding process will assist WSU Microsoft Teams users through setup and customization of the new Chat interface. Users will have the option to utilize the new layout or revert to the original, separate chat and channels view based on their preferences.

Additional changes include filters to highlight unread content, an @mentions view that collects all messages directed to a user, and the ability to create custom sections for organizing conversations by topic or project. These changes aim to simplify navigation and message management within Teams.

No immediate action is required. Microsoft will automatically transition WSU users to the unified Chat interface once it is live.
