The Common Reading Program is hosting a talk by Bill Kabasenche (Philosophy) on “The Ethics of Social Science Research in the Real World,” at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 13, with options to attend virtually via Zoom and in person on the Pullman campus in Spark G45. Using the field work that Priya Fielding-Singh undertook for How the Other Half Eats as a starting point, Kabasenche will explore the ethical parameters of research conducted out in the real world rather than in a lab. What do researchers owe their subjects in such studies? How should we think about research that might actually change things in the world? What is the difference between social science research and social activism?
Kabasenche, a faculty member in Philosophy as well as the Ethics Education Director for the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, will consider these questions using a variety of examples of actual social science research studies and through the lens of current research ethics standards and regulations.
