The Asian American and Pacific Islander Student Center on the Pullman campus is hosting a series of discussions known as “Talking Circles” to gather feedback on how to make it more inclusive. Among the ideas being explored is changing the center’s name to Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Student Center.
Faculty and staff are invited to join students in providing input during the next “Talking Circle” on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 3 p.m. in the AAPI Student Center in CUB 414.
There are about 57 cultures under the umbrella term “Asian American and Pacific Islander” but it doesn’t recognize people of South Asian descent — those from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan. To address this issue, the national trend is to use the term “Desi” to represent these populations.
The final “Talking Circle” of the semester is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 3 p.m. in the AAPI Student Center. The discussions are led by Sydney Ueda, a senior majoring in biology. For more information, contact dominique.fagaautau@wsu.edu.
