Sarah Whitley will present a Common Reading talk on “The Challenges and Effects of Rural Food Insecurity: An Eastern Washington Case Study” at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, via Zoom. Her talk will address the extent of food insecurity in our region, the unique factors contributing to this issue, the coping strategies used by rural food insecure community members, and the challenges and effects faced by the rural food insecure. Whitley is a faculty member In Sociology whose research focuses on food insecurity and hunger in rural and urban settings as well as public policy that addresses the increasing hunger epidemic. Her talk is part of the Common Reading faculty lecture series highlighting WSU research that addresses topics related to the 2024–25 Common Reading book, How the Other Half Eats: The Untold Story of Food and Inequality in America by Priya Fielding-Singh.
