Engineering and Technology program director receives Fulbright Award to Cameroon

Luna Magpili, Washington State University’s director of the Engineering and Technology Management program, has received a Fulbright Program award.

She will be developing and teaching engineering and technology management courses, including supply chain management, project management, and digital governance, at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Travaux Publics in Cameroon.

Magpili is one of over 400 U.S. citizens who share expertise with host institutions abroad through the Fulbright Specialist Program each year. Recipients of Fulbright Specialist awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, demonstrated leadership in their field, and their potential to foster long-term cooperation between institutions in the U.S. and abroad.

“It will be my honor to represent WSU and the U.S.,” said Magpili. “As an immigrant to this country, I am especially humbled. Coming from another developing country, the Philippines, I’ve always endeavored to do work, research, and outreach in these countries. I know firsthand how much they need the help and how much they can also contribute to partnerships.”

With WSU since 2013, Magpili has expertise in systems and industrial engineering as well as quality and supply chain management. She has experience as an industrial engineer and consultant and worked to improve the quality and productivity of various Philippine manufacturing and export enterprises. She has recently co-authored a book on operational risk management.

Magpili served as program officer for International Relief and Development and managed the supply chain and knowledge management involved in relief work across the globe. While she was at the University of Virginia, her research focused on service systems planning and developed methods and tools to aid decision makers plan for infrastructure and capital investments. She holds a PhD from the University of Virginia and a master’s and bachelor’s degree from University of the Philippines.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to build lasting connections between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Since its establishment in 1946, the Fulbright Program has given more than 400,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists, and scientists the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
