WSU receives national recognition for promoting democratic engagement

Washington State University has again been named a Voter Friendly Campus by the Campus Vote Project and NASPA, a national organization for student affairs professionals. This is the third time WSU has been named a Voter Friendly Campus since 2017.

The goal of the Voter Friendly Campus program is to help institutions develop democratic engagement action plans that coordinate administrators, faculty, and student organizations in civic and electoral engagement.

WSU received the recognition largely due to its in-person Student Voting Hubs, hosted on each campus in November. In partnership with their local county officials, the hubs allowed for Election Day voter registration for the first time. In Pullman, the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) reported nearly 800 people utilized the Student Voting Hub to register and/or vote, including over 600 on Election Day in 2022.

Also receiving national recognition is WSU graduate student Keilah Shaw, who this month was named to the 2023 All IN Student Voting Honor Roll.

Ben Calabretta, director of CCE, nominated Shaw for her critical work with the voting hub — not only with its planning and implementation, but also for facilitating dozens of Cougs Vote workshops. Shaw, who is graduating this spring with a master’s in criminal justice, is one of 175 students selected nationwide for the honor roll.
