Common Reading to screen ‘Gather’ documentary April 18

The Common Reading will screen the documentary “Gather” on Tuesday, April 18, at 4:30 p.m. in CUE 203. This 2020 film follows the stories of Indigenous people reconnecting with spiritual and cultural identities that were devastated by genocide. These stories include an Apache chef reclaiming ancient foodways, a Lakota high school student using science to prove the wisdom of traditional practices, and a group of young Yurok men working to rehabilitate salmon habitat.

This film complements use of Robin Wall Kimmerer’s collection “Braiding Sweetgrass” as the WSU Common Reading.  For the first time in its sixteen-year history, the Common Reading Program will be using this book for a second year as the 2023–24 common university text. For more information about upcoming events, as well as a links to Kimmerer’s February 2023 talk and to the WSU Teaching Guide for “Braiding Sweetgrass,” see commonreading.wsu.edu.
