A panel of scholars and students working to curate Nimiipuu (Nez Perce) traditional knowledge will share their their insights at a Common Reading talk on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 4:30 p.m. in CUE 203 and via Zoom. Their talk, “Sharing Nimiipuu Traditional Knowledge on the Plateau Peoples’ Web Portal” will highlight ongoing collaborative work between Nez Perce Cultural Resources Programs and Washington State University to interpret Nimiipuu material associated with the 1877 Nez Perce War. What new questions and insights are guiding the curation of Indigenous traditional knowledge? And how can these materials best be presented for both Tribal and general audiences?
The panelists will be Nakia Williamson, Director of the Nez Perce Tribe’s Cultural Resources Program, Nez Perce Tribe; Trevor Bond, Associate Dean of the WSU Libraries; and WSU students Nakia Cloud and Payton Sobotta. Viewers can access the livestreamed talk via Zoom.
This talk is one in a year-long series complementing the use of Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants” as this year’s WSU Common Reading Book. Links to the unlimited downloadable library copy of the book, a new Teaching Guide featuring a wealth of campus and regional resources, and the upcoming calendar of events are all available at CommonReading.wsu.edu.
