WSU Police warn students of employment scam

A fraudulent employment scam targeting university students is becoming increasing prevalent nationwide.

As part of this fraudulent employment scheme, the suspects pose as university professors, contact college students via email and advertise fake job opportunities. The scam often involves asking the students to deposit fake bank checks into their bank accounts and then transferring the money to the suspects via payment apps and gift cards.

The WSU Police Department is asking Cougs to be suspicious of any unsolicited job opportunities and never share personal or financial information with unverified sources. Additional tips can be found on the Federal Trade Commission’s website.

If you have been a victim of this type of scam, please report the incident to the Internet Crime Complaint Center as well as local law enforcement.
