Cougs stay safe when receiving external emails

Beginning Tuesday evening, May 24, Information Technology Services (ITS) will begin including an external sender warning at the top of email messages to alert recipients that the message is from an external sender and should be carefully reviewed to prevent any potential security issues.

Alerting WSU recipients of messages from outside WSU offers community members the opportunity to protect the university against threats caused by inadvertently clicking malicious links, opening potentially dangerous attachments, and responding to phishing emails sent by external senders.

An example of the external sender warning is shown below. When users see an email message with this banner, make sure the sender is known and the content of the message is from a trusted source before clicking on any links or attachments.

[EXTERNAL EMAIL] DO NOT CLICK LINKS OR ATTACHMENTS UNLESS YOU RECOGNIZE THE SENDER AND KNOW THE CONTENT IS SAFE.

Please direct any questions regarding this change to Crimson Service Desk via email at crimsonservicedesk@wsu.edu or by phone at 509-335-4357.

The Notices and Announcements section is provided as a service to the WSU community for sharing events such as lectures, trainings, and other highly transactional types of information related to the university experience. Information provided and opinions expressed may not reflect the understanding or opinion of WSU. Accuracy of the information presented is the responsibility of those who submitted it. The self-uploaded posts are reviewed for compliance with state statutes and ethics guidelines but are not edited for spelling, grammar, or clarity.
