Training on Native terminology

The Institute for Research to Educate and Advance Community Health (IREACH) and WSU’s Office of Tribal Relations are teaming up with the Native Governance Center to host a training on appropriate terminology related to Native groups.

“Language Matters: How to talk about Native Nations” will be an hour-long training beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 28. The training will be conducted via Zoom and is open to WSU administrators, faculty, staff, and students.

In addition to covering acceptable language, the first of what will be two sessions will focused on the wide range of opinions on language and terminology within Indian Country. During breakout sessions and live Q&A sessions, participants will learn about numerous relevant topics:

  • Native Nations that share geography with Washington State
  • Native American vs. Indigenous vs. American Indian vs. Alaska Native
  • Respectfully referring to individual Native people and groups of Native people

The Native Governance Center is a Native-led organization passionate about bringing accessible, educational content related to sovereignty, nation rebuilding, and Indian County. WSU’s partnership with the group is made possible thanks to support from IREACH.

Those looking to participate can register online.
