We are seeking participants for an a lesson-based experimental curriculum. This is a study about your perceptions of people with disabilities. You will be involved in a three-hour lesson (approximately one hour of that will be spent on taking surveys) where you will be asked about your perceptions of people with disabilities, your opinions of people with disabilities represented in certain situations.
This study involves four different classroom groups, you will be randomly assigned to one of the four groups. Two of the groups will receive a different topic of instruction and a different teaching style. This allows us to compare group results to see if a new curriculum on disability representation in the media is effective in improving attitudes toward people with disabilities. The other two groups will receive lessons on Japanese Culture and Intercultural Communication. We are expecting 25-35 undergraduate students in each classroom setting.
Within the lesson, you will participate in individual and group activities. After the lesson, students will participate in a short focus group to understand what worked and what did not work with how the lesson was structured and presented. Your feedback will be very helpful to us and is greatly appreciated. If you are a Murrow College Student you will have the opportunity to get up to 3-hours of extra credit in participating Murrow College classes. In addition to extra credit, all participants will receive a $25 visa gift card for participation in this study and will be given pizza before the lesson starts. Your participation in this study will provide a better understanding of undergraduate student perceptions toward people with disabilities.
If you are receiving extra credit in a class to complete this survey you will be asked for your ID # and class associated with the extra credit at the end of the survey. This information will not be attached to the results in anyway and will only be used to award the extra credit.
This research has been approved for human subject participation by the Washington State University Institutional Review Board.
