You are cordially invited to this annual event Fri., Aug. 2, that will take place in the CUE Atrium. Students from around 50 schools nationwide will be by their posters from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the CUE Atrium (second floor). A keynote address will open the symposium at 9 a.m. in the nearby CUE 203. Please plan to attend both!
The keynote, “3-D Printing of Hard Materials for Structural and Biomedical Applications,” will be delivered by Amit Bandyopadhyay, Lindholm Endowed Chair Professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.
The summer research students worked on projects:
- With mentoring WSU faculty members and graduate students
- Funded by NSF, NIH, USDA, and professors’ grantsInvestigating topics such as smart homes, disease diagnostics, wearable computing, and much more.
- At the Pullman campus as well as at WSU Extension centers, an urban campus, and the forested resort town of McCall, Idaho. Some summer researchers worked on a WSU/Iowa State Univ. collaborative project, and five will travel from Iowa to Pullman just for the symposium.
To be in the summer group, students typically apply online for WSU projects that are promoted by NSF, for example. Being accepted for prestigious summer research at WSU is not only great to gain experience and fortify resumes, said Shelley Pressley, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research. “It’s also a way for students looking ahead to graduate studies to spend time at a school and with renowned professors that interest them.”
“Diverse” is the word to describe this year’s summer researchers, according to Pressley. They are from:
- Every year in college—plus a recent graduate and a few high schoolers.
- 49 schools, including the University of Arizona, the University of Southern California, the University of Minnesota, The Ohio State University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Cornell and Dartmouth, Pacific Lutheran University, Bellevue and Morehouse colleges, and, WSU itself.
- Majors across the STEM spectrum, including food and nutrition, biomedical engineering, sustainable materials and technology, biology, chemistry, computer science, forestry, and many more.
