Information Technology Services began transferring all data and voice network services from its current decade-old, 10-gigabit-per-second equipment to its new 100-gigabit-per-second infrastructure last Saturday, July 14.
1) Work on the Sloan sector of campus will be included in this weekend’s work.
2) Tentative Work schedule for this Saturday, July 21 (building schedule may change as need arises):
- 8-10 a.m. – Sloan
- 10-12 p.m. – Holland
- 1-3 p.m. – Neill
- 3-5 p.m. – ITB
Project Information:
A 10-fold increase in capacity, which ITS compared to going from driving on a single-lane road, to a 10-lane highway.
WSU Pullman’s network cabling equipment provides data transportation via emails, voice network services and more. However, with increasing data demands, the university’s aging cable system poses potential data traffic issues.
The plan is to roll the transfer out in four phases, July 14-29.
It is estimated that this 10-fold increase in network capacity is necessary to support the next seven to ten years of network applications, data growth and equipment updates. The process will be done according to the following schedule and could result in brief network service interruptions:
July 14 – Food Science Human Nutrition distribution (northeast side of campus), tentative start time, 8 a.m. Sloan distribution (southwest part of campus), tentative start time, 1 p.m.
July 21 – Neill distribution (southeast part of campus), tentative start time, 8 a.m. Information Technology Building distribution (central campus), tentative start time, 1 p.m. Holland distribution (northwest side of campus), tentative start time, 5 p.m.
July 28 – Feeds for ResCore (residence halls), ITB/Sloan data centers and wireless distribution routers will be cut to new equipment, tentative start time, 8 a.m.
July 29 – Final Ancila Project close-out and follow-up of unexpected contingencies, tentative start time, 10 a.m.
