The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites all to a colloquium featuring Dr. Fred Gittes, Department of Physics & Astronomy, Washington State University. Dr. Gittes will present his talk, “Electromagnetism as Geometry”, Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 4:10 p.m. in Webster 17.
Meet for refreshments before the lecture at 3:45 – 4:10 p.m. in the foyer on floor G above the lecture hall.
Abstract: Electromagnetism is the mainstay of real-world physics, and has repeatedly served as a model for newer ideas as well. Over time, physicists have kept encountering ways in which electromagnetism is actually geometrical, and I’ll look at a few routes by which electromagnetism leads you into differential geometry. The ideas should be fun and thought-provoking for anyone familiar with E&M.
