WSU’s annual fitness competition is around the corner, and this year’s event will be held at a brand new facility. The Palouse Throwdown will be held Saturday, September 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Chinook Student Center.
Participants will form same-sex teams and compete in four events to stake their claim for the championship. There will be both Rx and scaled divisions, which have different levels of difficulty, for both men and women. Teams can decide which division is best for their level of strength and fitness.
The competition has been moved to the fall this year to promote the new CrossFit Facility at the Chinook Student Center. It had previously been held outside at Valley Playfields but the Chinook will provide more flexibility. In addition to outdoor events, the competition can go inside for pull-ups and wall-balls which will be new this year.
The first event will consist of six different rounds of deadlifts with burpees. Next, participants will do wall balls, pull-ups, 100 calories rowed, and a sled push. The third event will start with box jump overs, which will be followed by dumbbell snatches and squat cleans. The fourth and final event is a surprise and will be revealed at the event.
Chinook Fitness Coordinator Matt Atwell is excited to host a local fitness event. There are numerous events on the west side of the state, but few local competitions.
“This is a very cool way for our athletes to express their fitness and to also provide a competition for seasoned CrossFit athletes as well as those new to the sport,” Atwell said.
The new facility will feature new activities and equipment, it also makes the Palouse Throwdown more convenient for organizers and participants. Bathroom and locker room facilities will be on site along with food and other amenities of the Chinook. It will also make set up and take down much easier from a logistical standpoint for those putting on the event.
