Cary Nelson, former president of the American Association of University Professors, will be on campus May 1-2, presenting two talks: “An AAUP Chapter Can Transform your Campus” May 1, 12:30 – 2 p.m., in Bundy Reading Room, Avery Hall; and “In the Corporate Pocket: When Profit and Secrecy Control University Research,” May 2, 3 – 4 p.m., in the Honors Lounge. Nelson was president of the American Association of University Professors from 2006-2012, and is Professor Emeritus of English and Jubilee Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has published or edited over twenty five books, including No University Is an Island: Saving Academic Freedom and Recommended Principles to Guide Academy-Industry Relationships. He and has written about oil and gas industry funded research or “frackedemia”. His visit is sponsored by the Office of the President, the Department of English, Cultural Studies and Social Thought in Education doctoral program, and the College of Education.
