The WSU Program in Individualized Medicine (PrIMe) is seeking DNA (cheek swab samples) from dogs > 25 pounds for a study designed to optimize drug safety and efficacy in dogs.
The DNA sample will be used to determine whether your dog has a variant form or the normal form of a plasma protein that binds drugs in the blood stream. The variant form of the plasma protein could predispose your dog to adverse drug reactions. Depending on results of the DNA test, we may contact you to obtain a blood sample from your dog at a later date. Your dog’s blood sample will be used to determine how well certain drugs bind to the variant form of the protein compared to the normal form of the protein. No drugs will be administered to your dog, drugs will be added to tubes containing your dog’s blood. The blood sample will be collected at the WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. For dogs that provide blood samples, a $30 gift card will be provided as an incentive.
Please contact Cassandra Pattison (casspattison@vetmed.wsu.edu) if you would like for your dog to participate or if you have any questions. A DNA collection kit (swab, information about the study, client consent form and pre-stamped return envelope) will be mailed to you via US post or campus mail.
