Dr. Kathy Hibbard from the Terrestrial Ecology Program, Earth Science Division at NASA will present, Climate and energy systems in the Pacific Northwest from now to the future: Examining the portfolio of options for balanced decisions.
Abstract: As we move into the 21st Century and beyond, it’s become clear that our environment is changing. Climate and weather events frame human and natural system interactions across broad swaths of time and space. Days to centuries, local constituencies, state, regional, national and global phenomenon all play a role in our back yards and beyond. Energy systems, land and water resources are intricately linked and their emergent behavior interacts with climate and weather systems across these scales. This talk will explore the differences between weather and climate, how climate and decision making processes impact and are influenced by global to local water resources, land use and energy systems. Sustainable options for land, energy and hydrologic systems in the Pacific Northwest will depend on a balanced consideration of management objectives versus tradeoffs and consequences of our decisions at home and abroad.
