Washington State University (WSU) has been named to the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and recognized in both the general community service and education categories. This designation is the highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to student civic engagement and community service. This is the fifth time WSU has been honored by CNCS and President Obama with this recognition.
Recently, WSU was also honored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching with a renewal of the Community Engagement Classification. To earn this honor, universities must demonstrate a wide range of mutually beneficial partnerships with communities. WSU has held the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification since 2008. For more information on this classification, see the WSU press release here.
Washington State University is a public research university committed to its land-grant heritage and tradition of service to society. “It is this commitment to community engagement that has allowed WSU to receive these prestigious honors,” said Melanie Brown, Director of the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE). The CCE facilitates opportunities for WSU students, faculty, and community partners to share knowledge, skills, and resources for the benefit of student learning and the wellbeing of our communities. In 2013-2014, more than 8700 WSU students recorded over 76,000 community service hours with the CCE.
