Each month, the Center for Civic Engagement’s Service Star Program recognizes outstanding students who demonstrate exemplary service by impacting the community and demonstrating leadership and teamwork abilities. Nominations can be submitted by WSU faculty and staff, community partners, CCE staff members or other students.
The November Service Star, Kyle Geiger, is a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, a student board member for the College Hill Association, and the current Director of Service for the Interfraternity Council. In his IFC role, Kyle has worked with 25 fraternities to increase fraternity men’s civic engagement in the greater Palouse Community. Kyle planned and implemented the first ever 96 hour Greek food drive as part of Poverty Awareness Week, which engaged more than 300 Greek students in the local community. Kyle’s effort in trying to increase involvement of WSU students, and articulate the importance of civic engagement does not go unrecognized.
The December Service Star, Gaberielle Wieler, was nominated for the Service Star by staff at “PS. I Love You” where she has volunteered over 20 hours this semester. “PS. I Love You” is a local low income parenting support group that provides fellowship and education to parents of preschoolers while the children receive care from qualified teachers. Gaberielle’s impact on the children is obvious when she is calming a crying baby, playing with a group of kids, and running up and down the stairs making sure classrooms have what they need. Her nominators state that “she has helped our busy program run smoothly. She is someone that we can count on to show up and be ready for meeting the needs of our children, teachers and parents. Her consistency, flexibility, warmth and love for kids has been such a gift to ‘PS. I Love You’ this semester!”
