“Free speech” lecture TODAY, 5 p.m.

I hope you’ll consider attending this afternoon’s Friel Lecture in GCAD 21 at 5 p.m., which will feature Mary Beth Tinker.

As a middle-schooler, Ms. Tinker became the plaintiff in the most important student free speech case in American history. She and some friends wore black armbands to protest the Vietnam war and were expelled. Four years later the U.S. Supreme Court overturned that expulsion and ruled that public school students have freedom of speech. So if you attended public school in the U.S., you have Ms. Tinker to thank for your speech rights!

She’ll be talking about her experience, as well as about student speech rights generally. Please come and welcome Ms. Tinker to WSU!
