Many educators, researchers and social scientists feel the way to decrease the achievement gap is to decrease the “opportunity gap.”
Opportunity gaps result when students do not have equal opportunities to quality education, services, and resources needed to succeed in school.
This afternoon, Rep. John McCoy (D-38) will speak to students, future teachers, and others interested about opportunity gaps in teaching and learning.
It’s part of the Diversity in Schools and Society Reception Series, and has as one its goals to close the opportunity gaps in Washington state’s K-12 schools.
Rep. Susan Fagan (R-9) will also at this afternoon’s event, as a distinguished guest.
This afternoon’s reception is the third in the series. Thus far, visits have been made by the director of Title I at Federal Way Public Schools, and the executive director of the Equity in Education Coalition.
Today’s reception will take place from 2:30 – 4 p.m. in Cleveland Hall Room 160.
The receptions are hosted by the College of Education and the Office for Access, Equity, and Achievement.
