Doris Lohrey-Birch has worked with the Combined Fund Drive for 16 years.

“It’s an easy way to contribute to things that are important to you,” said Lohrey-Birch, a senior secretary with the entomology department.

The CFD is Washington’s authorized and supported workplace giving program for state employees. For more than 20 years, employees have been donating to more than 2,000 local, national and international charities of their choice via the CFD.

“The needs are great, and even if a person is only able to contribute about $3 or $4 a month, that $3 or $4 can make a difference,” Lohrey-Birch said.

Dee Dee Torgeson, an administrative manager with the philosophy department, has worked to increase awareness about the CFD throughout her department for 10 years.

“Fundraising is important,” Torgeson said. “There are people who have needs that we can help meet.”

Lohrey-Birch and Torgeson, along with others who have volunteered with the CFD for five, 10 or 15 years, will be honored at this year’s CFD Kickoff celebration.

“The CFD’s purpose is to raise money and support for charities, providing a convenient channel for state employees to contribute,” said Laura Lahne, CFD coordinator at WSU.
