Presentation connects diabetes researchers

When Linda Garrelts MacLean, interim chair of pharmacotherapy, presents on the topic of diabetes, one of her favorite slides maps the incidence of the disease across the United States in the years 1994 and 2004. The 1994 map shows only two “red” states (with the highest prevalence of diabetes, between 6 and 9.9 percent), but the 2004 map shows most states red.

The alarming rise in diabetes prompted MacLean, her colleagues at WSU Spokane, and WSU Extension to form the WSU Diabetes Initiative about 18 months ago. Initiative members will present some of their research at the Fall 2006 Diabetes Initiative Forum, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Intercollegiate College of Nursing, Room 66. It is partly intended to help presenting investigators identify potential co-investigators among attending faculty and students.
