Giving a little can go a long way, especially when combined with the gifts of many others.

Through the Washington State Employees Combined Fund Drive (CFD), WSU faculty and staff have been giving for more than 20 years, and their generosity continues to grow. Last year, 9.8 percent of WSU employees pledged $169,894, a three percent increase in giving compared to 2004 and the largest pledge ever.

Despite the openhanded efforts of many WSU employees, there is always room for growth. While WSU pledged the second highest amount of funds compared to other Washington public colleges, participation levels were among the lowest. Other universities boasted 11-20 percent participation.

“I am impressed that many of our employees give,” said President V. Lane Rawlins. “Still, I believe the percentage of giving falls short of our potential and I know we can improve.”

The CFD is an opportunity for employees statewide to give to any registered local, national or international charities of their choice through payroll deductions. Due to low administrative costs and accrued interest on funds, 105 percent of every dollar goes to the chosen charities.

Hurricane Katrina relief
In light of the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, a special one-time donation fund has been set up to contribute to relief efforts. All interested employees may give by logging onto www.givingstation.com/?cid=3172 and choosing the “Begin Giving” option. Once there, select Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief and indicate which nonprofit organization you wish to give to.

This is different from the normal Combined Fund Drive donating in that funds will only be removed from the employee’s paycheck once on Oct. 10. This will not cancel or conflict with any other current donation. Employees may continue donating to any organization after Oct. 10 through the Giving Station, and they will see that designation deducted from pay beginning in 2006.

CFD kickoff
The annual CFD kickoff, open to the public, will be 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, in the Lewis Alumni Centre. For more information about the CFD, visit the website at www.wsu.edu/wsucfd or contact Theresa MacNaughton at 335-2704.
