Noted playwright and poet Thomas Meloncon, whose artistry dissect society’s ills and suggest alternatives, will perform “Straight from the Heart of Thomas Meloncon” at 7 p.m., Feb. 11, in Jones Theatre of Daggy Hall. Meloncon will read poems and excerpts from his plays while WSU students perform interpretive dance and music.
Meloncon has published a book of poetry entitled “Poetry In E Minor.” His second book of poems, “Recollections,” is slated for publication shortly. He also has performed with numerous jazz musicians in the south, including WSU’s Horace Alexander Young, and has written nine major plays. While his writings have special resonance for the African American community, they deal with universal themes of love and self-respect.
On Feb. 12, Meloncon will attend the opening night University Theatre production of his play “Johnny B. Goode” at 8 p.m. in Jones Theatre and lead a question-and-answer session afterwards.
Meloncon is currently teaching playwriting at Texas Southern University and is resident playwright at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston.
