PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University wants to begin by acknowledging the profound loss suffered by the Martinez family. The death of Sam Martinez in November 2019 was a tragedy, and the university continues to hold his family and loved ones in its thoughts.
Today, the Washington State Supreme Court issued a 5 to 4 decision allowing the lawsuit involving Sam Martinez to move forward in trial court. This decision means that the case now will move forward to a possible trial in Superior Court.
While this decision does not determine the outcome of this case, the university respects the judicial process and will continue to engage responsibly and thoughtfully as the case moves forward.
Washington State University remains committed to student safety and to continually strengthening its policies, education, and oversight related to hazing prevention and alcohol misuse. These efforts reflect its ongoing commitment to its students and community including fostering a campus community that provides students with the education and resources to make responsible choices.
