Sport management career-track professor Pete Van Mullem has been named the International Sport Coaching Journal’s (ISCJ) editorial board member of the year for 2024, a recognition of his exceptional contributions to advancing sport coaching research worldwide.
The ISCJ is a peer-reviewed journal designed to advance the research and development of sport coaching. The editorial board is made up of 23 professors from countries around the world, including Australia, Brazil, and the United Kingdom.
“My role on the board is to review articles submitted to the publication,” Van Mullem said. “I always agree to all review requests that meet the journal’s guidelines; some review requests can be turned down. To make the process work, it is important for editorial board members to meet specific deadlines. I was consistent in meeting the deadlines.”
Tammy Crawford, an associate professor in the sport management program, said Van Mullem’s contributions to the program have been invaluable since he became a professor at WSU.
“This is Dr. Van Mullem’s second year as a full-time professor in the sport management program here at WSU and his work and connections through ISCJ are great additions to our program,” Crawford said. “His experience and research in sport coaching, both domestically and globally, benefit our students and offers opportunities for collaboration with faculty and practitioners.”

In addition to his role on the ISCJ editorial board, Van Mullem has served on the task force for the revision of the National Standards for Sport Coaches. He has 14 years of professional experience in administrative and coaching roles at a variety of levels, including collegiate. Van Mullem said the work done outside of the classroom is crucial for both the school and students in the classroom. He said students are able to get new insights from professors with international teaching experience.
“By having a global perspective on topics, we can better prepare our students for working in a global industry,” Van Mullem said. “The more current you are in your role, the better teacher and educator you are. It keeps you relevant in the eyes of your students.”
Van Mullem has authored more than 50 publications related to coaching development in both trade and academic publications, including books, book chapters, and journal articles. He is the writer of the biography Cornfields to Gold Medals, published in June 2023, and the co-author of two published books: To Be a Better Coach and the National Standards for Sport Coaches.
