Washington State Supreme Court Justice to speak at Pre-Law Day

PULLMAN — Debra L. Stephens, Washington Supreme Court justice, will deliver the keynote address for Washington State University’s Cougar Pre-Law Day at 1 p.m. on April 10 in the Smith Center for Undergraduate Education (CUE), room 518. Stephens will speak on law as an avenue to public service.

A native of Spokane, Stephens took office on the Washington Supreme Court Jan. 1, 2008, after serving as a judge for Division Three of the Court of Appeals. Prior to her court appointments, Stephens practiced appellate law, appearing in the Washington Supreme Court, Washington Court of Appeals, Idaho Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, and as counsel of record in the U.S. Supreme Court.

Cougar Pre-Law Day is an afternoon of workshops providing information for those interested in attending law school and will include discussions that range from selecting a program and preparing a successful application to career options and areas of legal specialization.

Workshops will be presented by attorneys and representatives from law schools, including Don Burnett, dean of the University of Idaho College of Law; Norma Rodriguez, director of J.D. admissions recruitment and diversity at the University of Washington School of Law; and Susan Lee, director of admissions at Gonzaga University School of Law.

Cougar Pre-Law Day is cosponsored by WSU’s Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service and the College of Liberal Arts.  The event is free and open to all.

The Foley Institute fosters civic education, public service, and public policy research in a nonpartisan, cross-disciplinary setting. It has a threefold mission at WSU that covers public affairs programming and education, public policy research and Congressional studies, and student involvement in public policy and public service.
