Women in Leadership speaker series

RICHLAND — A series of monthly events highlighting women’s achievements in the professional world begins Friday, Oct. 3, at WSU Tri-Cities.
 
The monthly Women in Leadership presentations will culminate in March 2009 with a celebration of National Women’s History Month.
 
Lura J. Powell is the inaugural speaker for the Women in Leadership speaker series, coordinated by students in the WSU Tri-Cities Business Club. Her presentation on “Building Your Career – Lessons I Learned Along the Way” starts at 12 p.m. in the West Building Atrium, 2710 University Drive, Richland. Admission is free and open to the public.

Powell is the Board of Trustees chairwoman for the $350 million Washington State Life Sciences Discovery Fund, which finances innovative life sciences research in Washington to promote competitiveness, enhance economic vitality and improve health and health care. Powell also provides consulting services on business management, R&D investment, technology transfer, technology policy, and government relations.
 
Powell earned a bachelor’s of science in chemistry and a doctorate in analytical chemistry from the University of Maryland. She is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Powell’s previous positions include director of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and president of Advanced Imaging Technologies, where she led the medical imaging company in the development of the ARIA Breast Imaging System.

WSU Tri-Cities Chancellor Vicky L. Carwein will be the Business Club’s Nov. 7 speaker.
