Women’s basketball season premieres

Under the direction of the Cougars’ new head coach June Daugherty, WSU women’s basketball opens its 2007-08 season in the first of two exhibition contests against Southern Oregon at 7 p.m., Friday, at Friel Court.
 
The Cougars will also play host to Alaska-Anchorage at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 5, in the final tune-up before the regular season.
 
The Cougars return three starters from last year’s team: junior guard Katie Appleton (5 foot – 8 inches); junior center Ebonee Coates (6-4) and sophomore guard Colleen Betteridge (5-9).
 
Appleton was WSU’s second-leading scorer last season (8.1 ppg),  Betteridge averaged 5.2 points per game, and Coates added 4.3 points per game.
 
Coates was also the Cougars’ leading shot blocker in 2007, recording more than a block per game (1.1 bpg).
 
WSU also returns redshirt junior Sabrina Shired (6-4, center), junior Heather Molzen (6-3, forward/center) and sophomores Nakejia Kelly (5-7, guard) and Alexa Price (5-8, guard).
 
New to this year’s team are redshirt freshman Salena Dickerson (5-11, guard/forward) and freshmen Katie Calderwood (6-0, forward), Kezia Kelly (5-6, guard) and Jasmine Williams (5-9, guard).
