Farm walk focuses on organic grain production

PUYALLUP – Farmers Brooke and Sam Lucy will discuss the growing, processing and direct marketing of certified organic grains during a farm walk at their Bluebird Grain Farms near Winthrop on Monday, Oct. 22..

The farm walk, the last for this season, will be held from noon to 3:30 p.m. at the farm loca
ted northwest of Winthrop (driving directions below). The cost is $10 for members of Tilth Producers of Washington and $15 for nonmembers.

The Lucy’s organically raise rye, red wheat, flax and the heirloom grain emmer (farro) that they sell as whole grain and process into a variety of products that they market directly to consumers. Farm walks provide a forum for farmers to share their knowledge with one another. The farm walks are sponsored by the WSU Small Farms Team and Tilth Producers of Washington.
 
Directions: From Winthrop,go northwest on State Route 20. Turn right on West Chewuch Road. Go about a mile and turn left on Rendezvous Road, a dirt road. Stay to the right going up a steep grade for 2.3 miles and look for a yellow and blue sign with the bluebird logo.
