VANCOUVER – Southwest Washington Math, Engineering, Science Achievement will hold its 3rd Annual MESA Day at Clark College from 8:30
a.m. to 3 p.m. March 24, opening in Foster Auditorium.
MESA Day serves students from six area middle schools, giving them opportunities to showcase design, problem solving, mathematical and
communication skills on a competitive basis. This year’s activities will include the Trebuchet, Newspaper Bridge Building, Egg Drop, Foil Floaters, Write-it, Do-it and Math Olympiad. Activities will take place in Bauer Hall and the O’Connell Sports Center.
“It’s the highlight of the year for many of these students,” said Armetta Burney, Southwest Washington MESA coordinator.
MESA brings resources into K-12 schools to help close the academic achievement gap and build a pathway to careers in engineering and science,
serving students who are underrepresented in math and science based careers: African American, Native American, Latino(a) and female.
Southwest Washington MESA is housed at Washington State University Vancouver and serves students from Jason Lee, McLoughlin, Cascade, Pacific, Jemtegaard and Canyon Creek middle schools.
In addition to student activities, parents will have the opportunity to participate in seminars throughout the day. An awards ceremony will
complete the event.
