Human Resource Services has scheduled a variety of leadership development opportunities for the 2006-2007 academic year. For a complete listing of dates and topics, go to the HRS home page, www.hrs.wsu.edu, click on Leadership Development and enroll online. Some of the highlights include:
• Managing in Cougar Country workshop for supervisors/managers, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 10. Len Jessup, vice president of University Development and president of the WSU Foundation, will talk about discovering the leader within. Michael Tate, vice president of Equity and Diversity, and Raul Sanchez, director of the Center for Human Rights, will discuss diversity, equal employment opportunity and sexual harassment prevention. Following a complimentary lunch, participants will choose among twelve workshops.
• Workshops for Department Chairs and Directors, co-sponsored by the Provost’s Office, begin Sept. 14. Scheduled for 7:30-9 a.m. on select Wednesdays and Thursdays, workshops address such topics as faculty performance reviews, business policies and procedures and the state ethics law.
• Workshops for Administrative Professional Managers and Supervisors, with topics ranging from recruiting and selecting employees to performance management, the Employee Assistance Program and dealing with workplace conflict.
• WSU Supervisory Training, an intensive series designed to provide and refresh supervisory and leadership skills for managers, supervisors and leads. State administrative code (WAC 357) requires that entry-level civil-service supervisors complete the series (unless eligible to opt out). Topics will include communication, leadership styles, motivation, coaching, performance management, corrective action and discipline.
• SkillSoft Online Training is available to all WSU employees and students. Skillsoft offers a multitude of leadership courses, books and simulations. Access SkillSoft from the HRS home page, www.hrs.wsu.edu.
