WSU hosts future scientists and engineers

WSU will host approximately 125-150 sophomores and juniors from area high schools with high numbers of minority and Native American students for the Future Scientists and Engineers program on May 21 and 22.

The College of Sciences and the College of Engineering and Architecture have invited high school students from the Yakima valley, Tri-Cities, Moses Lake and Chelan areas.

The students will be housed in Rogers Hall on the Pullman campus for the two-day program. They will have the opportunity to watch science and engineering demonstrations and perform hands-on experiments. Students also will visit the sciences buildings on campus and tour the bear center, raptor club, observatory and planetarium.

This is the second year the program will be offered at WSU. Last year, freshmen, sophomores and juniors were invited.

“This year we are targeting the sophomores and juniors,” said program organizer Ron Newton.

As for the success of the program, that is yet to be seen.

“Recruitment for the fall semester will be the real tell-tale data on how well we are doing,” said Newton.
