Washington State University is once again gearing up for RecycleMania. The competition, which runs from Jan. 29 to April 8, has grown to over 50 participating colleges and universities nationwide. Last year, WSU placed fifth in the Recycling Rate Competition.
RecycleMania is a nationwide challenge, where schools compete to see who can collect the most recyclables. For 2006, WSU Recycling’s goal is to participate at the highest level of the RecycleMania challenge and have the opportunity to become the RecycleMania Grand Champion.
To be eligible for this coveted spot, however, the university must excel in waste minimization, waste prevention and recycling. “We also need to exemplify a more holistic view to the school’s waste reduction efforts. Therefore, in addition to participating in the Per Capita Classic, we will also be competing in the Waste Minimization challenge,” said Judi Dunn, WSU’s recycling and sustainability education coordinator.
“New to RecycleMania, schools will compete to see who can generate the lowest waste per capita by concentrating on overall waste reduction instead of recycling. While we still wish to maintain or better our current recycling rates, we need to shift our attention to reducing and reusing to excel in this competition. WSU will be furthering their efforts by tracking compostable food wastes through dining services,” Dunn said
Weekly updates will be posted in the Evergreen and banners and recycled paper flyers will blanket the campus reminding everyone to recycle. WSU students, faculty and staff are also encouraged to challenge their friends, teachers and colleagues to use less and recycle more.
Additionally, students, faculty and staff should look out for RecycleMania questions hidden in the Evergreen everyday. The first student, staff or faculty member to call WSU Recycling at (509)335-8094 will receive a donated prize.
