A national survey of faculty members done every four years by the U.S. Education Department recently revealed that, as of fall 2003:
• 56 percent of faculty and instructional staff members were employed full time and 44 percent were employed part time. At WSU, 87 percent of faculty and instructional staff were full time, and 13 percent part time, in the fall of 2004.
• Nationally, 80.3 percent of the full-time faculty and instructional staff were white, while 8.7 percent were Asian/Pacific Islander, 5.5 percent were black, 3.5 percent were Hispanic and 2 percent other. In 2004 at WSU, 67.0 percent were white, 7.6 percent Asian/Pacific Islander, 1.4 percent were black, 2.6 percent Hispanic, 0.6 percent American Indian and 20.9 percent did not report.
• Nationally, men made up 62 percent of the full-time faculty and instructional staff members, while women made up 38 percent. In 2004 at WSU, 62 percent were men and 38 percent were women.
• Nationally, faculty and instructional staff members who worked full time made an average basic salary of $67,400 from their institutions in 2003. At WSU, the average basic salary in 2003 was $60,018; in 2004 it increased to $62,514.
