Civil rights leader’s daughter addresses diversity

Motivational speaker and actress Yolanda King spoke at a press conference and performed in Beasley Coliseum Wednesday night, the first of a series of Pullman and Moscow events celebrating the life and work of her father, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

James Bledsoe, WSU MLK celebration chair, said King’s presentation is expected to inspire positive social change and provide a vision for world peace.

A Los Angeles resident, King will be the second of Martin Luther King Jr.’s children to appear during an MLK event in Pullman. Her brother, Martin Luther King III, spoke in 1995.

A tentative event list includes:

• Jan. 13, Gospel concert by God’s Harmony, a WSU student musical group

• Jan. 14, WSU Department of Comparative Ethnic Studies brown-bag lecture about social justice

• Jan. 15, Latah County Human Rights Task Force breakfast, Pullman unity march, Spokane performance by lyricist-musician-poet-actor Saul Williams

• Jan. 16, canned food drive

• Jan. 17, education project

• Jan. 18, MLK Distinguished Service Awards banquet, Moscow unity march

Not all celebration activities are finalized. For a complete schedule once plans are firmed up, visit https://www.wsu.edu/MLK or phone 335-4315.
