Plateau Center gets grant, interim director

Ron Pond has been named the interim director for the Plateau Center for American Indian Studies at WSU.

Pond came to Washington State University in the mid 1990s as a graduate student in the interdisciplinary doctoral program. He recently completed his dissertation and was hooded at the Dec. 11 commencement.

Before taking the new position with the Plateau Center, Pond taught a course on Native American music through the School of Music and Theatre Arts.

The center, which received a $250,000 grant for the fiscal year, aims to provide and create educational experiences for students, faculty and staff at WSU and on the reservations.

WSU is part of a larger project called the Northwest Regional Native American Project. The program includes Montana State University, University of Alaska Anchorage, University of Idaho, Oregon State University and Washington State University.

“Each university has a separate entity,” said Erich Lear, interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts. “Ours is the Plateau Center.”
