Marion Smith thanked for glass art donation

Doug Baker, vice provost for academic affairs, thanks Marion Smith for donations during the official Oct. 26 dedication of the Marian E. Smith Glass Collection on display in the Smith Center for Undergraduate Education. The collection features the art of Pilchuck glass artists: Flo Perkins, Charlie Parriott, Sonja Blomdahl, Richard Royal, Dale Chihuly and Stephen Powell.
Smith said that “Art allows us to gain insight into human values, historical events and how individuals wish to be understood by others. This power to educate is reflected in the key role art and art history play alongside literature as the basis of a liberal arts education. While a museum or gallery can expose students to the upper tier of artistic expression, gaining a full understanding of the role and power of art in a society requires more than an occasional exposure to creative works.”
Helping honor Smith were Chris Bruce, Museum of Art director, and Sam Smith, former WSU president.
