PULLMAN, Wash. — John C. Bogle, founder of The Vanguard Group, Inc. and president of the Bogle Financial Markets Research Center, will visit Washington State University Tuesday April 13 to present the 2004 Gary P. Brinson Distinguished Lecture on finance.
His speech, “Mutual Funds: Part of the Problem or Part of the Solution,” will begin at 4:15 p.m. in Todd Hall Room 276. The public is invited.
“We are honored to welcome such a world-renowned financial expert, author and entrepreneur to our campus,” says Rick Sias, finance professor who holds the Brinson Chair in Investment Management. “In 1999, ‘Fortune’ magazine named Mr. Bogle one of the investment industry’s four ‘Giants of the 20th Century.’ Our students are excited about this opportunity to hear his insights and perspectives.”
The Vanguard Group, Inc. is one of the two largest mutual fund organizations in the world. Its Vanguard 500 Index Fund was the first index mutual fund and is the largest fund in the group. Bogle launched Vanguard in 1974 and served as chairman through 1997 and senior chairman through 1999.
Bogle is a critically acclaimed author of a number of best selling investment books. In 1999, he received the Woodrow Wilson Award from Princeton University, his alma mater, for “distinguished achievement in the nation’s service.” In addition to his presidency of Bogle Financial Markets Research Center, he currently serves as chairman of the board of the National Constitution Center, as a director of Instinet Corp., and as a member of The Conference Board’s Commission on Public Trust and Private Enterprise.
The Brinson lecture series is sponsored by gifts from Gary P. Brinson, CFA, a WSU MBA alumnus. He is the founder and retired chairman of Brinson Partners, Inc., and is a nationally recognized authority on global investing. In 1999, he received the Award for Professional Excellence from the Association for Investment Management Research. After his retirement in 2000, the Brinson family created The Brinson Foundation, a philanthropic organization.
Bogle is the third person to present the Brinson Lecture. The first was presented in April 2002 by Robert J. Shiller, Yale economist and author of the “New York Times” nonfiction bestseller, “Irrational Exuberance.” Last year, the Brinson Lecture was presented by Nobel Laureate Myron S. Scholes, an academician, businessperson and author who co-developed in 1973 the Black-Scholes Formula for the valuation of stock options, an important mechanism for managing risk in financial markets.
