More than 170 Employers to Make Appearance at Oct. 7 Career Expo of the Palouse

PULLMAN, Wash. – More than 170 employers are expected on the Palouse Oct. 7 as they vie for students of all majors from Washington State University and the University of Idaho at the Career Expo of the Palouse.

Career Expo will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum.  No registration is required.  Business dress and polished resumes are suggested.

This once-a-semester career fair provides a forum for students to network and locate internships, career positions, and graduate studies opportunities with exhibitors representing every economic sector.

Despite the slow economy, the expo shows signs of increased employer activity.  The list of returning companies boasts ARAMARK, American Express Financial Advisors, Cintas Corp., Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Micron Technology Inc., the Boeing Co., Verizon Wireless and many more. In addition, the Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Law and Flexel represent only two of the new employers scheduled to attend.  For a complete list of participants, visit www.careers.wsu.edu.

For students eager to have a successful Career Expo experience, Associated Events will help prepare participants with valuable skills and insights.  WSU Career Services’ Oct. 6 open house, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Lighty Student Services Building, Room 180, is a great opportunity for students to have their resumes critiqued, get tips on interview techniques and attire and learn how to make the most of the expo.  Another resource for interview attire is the “Dress to Impress” Web site, http://amdt.wsu.edu/research/dti/index.htm. UI students can participate in “How to Make A Career Fair Work For You” at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 1 in the Commons Clearwater Room. Here, a professional recruiter will present hot tips on making the most of quick meetings with potential employers.

Also Oct. 6, WSU will hold mock interviews from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The interviews provide a chance for students to practice interviewing one-on-one with a Career Expo recruiter.  After a 20-minute interview, recruiters will give feedback to the students about their resume appearance and content, nonverbal communication such as handshake and eye contact, and delivery and content of answers. WSU students may sign up for mock interviews at www.careers.wsu.edu from Sept. 12-21. Mock interviews for UI students will be held Oct. 6. Contact Dan Blanco, UI Career Services director, at (208) 885-6121 or dablanco@uidaho.edu for details.

Employers with jobs and anticipated job openings will schedule students to meet with employer representatives Oct. 8 during a mass-interview session at the Beasley Coliseum.  Students must secure invitations for interviews during the Career Expo on Oct. 7.

WSU and University of Idaho career services encourage all students — from freshman and seniors to graduate students — to attend the expo. Freshman and new attendees may practice meeting and networking with company recruiters, and all attendees may investigate internships, career opportunities and graduate study experiences.  Benefits include the chance to create personal connections to pave the way into a bright professional future.

Round-trip transportation from UI to the Oct. 7 Career Expo at Beasley Coliseum will include all-day continuous shuttle vans leaving from the south side of the Commons Building on the UI campus and hourly round-trip Wheatland Express bus service at regular stops that day.

The Oct. 3 Argonaut will feature a Career Expo insert to be used as a planner, with the entire list of participating employers and their locations.

The Career Expo of the Palouse is sponsored by WSU and UI. For more information, visit the WSU Career Services’ Web site at www.careers.wsu.edu or contact Stefany Unda at (509) 335-7127.
