Nominations Sought for 2004 Regents Scholars

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University President V. Lane Rawlins has called on high school principals across the state to nominate outstanding juniors for the university’s Regents Scholars Program.

The deadline for nomination materials to be received is May 9, 2003. Principals from each eligible high school across the state of Washington have the opportunity to nominate up to two juniors for the scholarship program. Nominated students must be members of the class of 2004 and must have a minimum grade point average of 3.80.

“This program aims to recognize outstanding students and keep them in the state of Washington for their college education,” President Rawlins said. “By acknowledging their accomplishments and offering them opportunities for significant support toward their education at WSU, we want to signify how important they are to our state’s future.”

Nominated students will be evaluated by the Regents Scholarship Committee and will compete for three separate award levels. Twenty-five Distinguished Scholars will be offered a four-year scholarship valued at more than $45,000. Some 75 students will be offered a Silver level scholarship worth $4,000, renewable for a second year, while 400 students will receive the Crimson level scholarship worth $3,000, renewable for a second year.

Last fall 428 students from more than 240 high schools were awarded scholarships through the Regents Scholars Program. The grade point average for the class of 2003 class was 3.93. Nominees included student body presidents and senators, National Honor Society members, National Merit Finalists, musicians, varsity athletes and community volunteers.
