5,500 stinky tennis shoes may resurface at WSU

The university’s Waste Wise recycling program has teamed up with the Nike corporation to launch a “Reuse-A-Shoe” campaign that will kick off Nov. 15 at the Student Recreation Center.

WSU was chosen as one of 25 recycling organizations to participate in Reuse-A-Shoe. Nike started this program in 1993 to resurface athletic fields, courts, tracks and playgrounds. Since the program began, 13 million shoes have been recycled.

The Reuse-A-Shoe program is part of Nike’s ongoing efforts to increase physical activities of youth and give them the means to do it by donating sports surfaces made from recycled shoes to communities around the world, said Judi Dunn, WSU recycling education coordinator.

WSU’s goal is to get students, faculty, staff and community members to bring in 5,500 used athletic shoes. If achieved, the school will be eligible for a new sport’s surface made from Nike grind material.

Throughout the year, there will be various drop-off sites around the campus. However, those who donate their old athletic shoes on Nov. 15 at the SRC will receive a free gift, Dunn said.
